A fast-growing wildfire known as the Ranch Fire broke out near Apple Valley, Southern California, on Tuesday afternoon, quickly spreading to over 4,200 acres by nightfall.

Residents captured the blaze that was fuelled by strong winds and forced evacuation orders for residents and their pets from the area south of Highway 18.

As of Wednesday afternoon, the fire was 10% contained, with crews working to control it while authorities investigate the cause.

The fire also impacted a protected 592-acre nature preserve, damaging desert springs and local wildlife habitat.
