A massive, house-sized asteroid is streaking through space at a blistering 42,300 miles per hour, coming alarmingly close to Earth. Measuring between 49 to 111 feet in diameter, it is one of several space rocks NASA is tracking this week, including two airplane-sized asteroids and another house-sized rock, “2025 HJ5,” which will also pass within 2.5 million miles of Earth. Earlier this year, NASA tracked the asteroid “2024 YR4,” which had a 3.1% chance of impacting Earth in 2032, though this risk has now been dramatically reduced. NASA continues to study these objects to better understand their trajectories and assess the risk they pose to our planet.
