A massive underwater volcano off the Oregon coast, known as the Axial Seamount, may erupt as soon as tomorrow, scientists warn.
The seafloor has swelled to levels seen before its last major eruption in 2015, while earthquake activity has surged to hundreds per day.
Researchers say magma is likely pushing to the surface, signalling an imminent eruption.
Thankfully, the volcano sits nearly 5,000 feet below the Pacific Ocean and poses no threat to people on land.
Still, the event offers a rare and valuable chance to study one of the world’s most active and closely monitored submarine volcanoes.
