A massive power outage has hit large parts of Spain and Portugal, including Madrid and Lisbon, causing widespread disruption.

The Spanish power grid operator, Red Electrica, is working to restore power as affected areas include Seville, Barcelona, and Valencia, with reports of downed telephone lines.

The blackout has led to the evacuation of parts of Madrid’s underground, halted play at the Madrid Open, and caused metro and tram services to shut down in Barcelona and Valencia.

Traffic lights have also failed in several cities, adding to the chaos as authorities work to determine the cause and restore services.
