Iceland’s Sunddhnúksgígar volcano erupted, prompting a ‘red alert’ and the evacuation of tourists from a popular holiday spot.

Astonishing footage showed smoke billowing from the eruption, which began after seismic activity and pressure changes indicated magma flow.

Authorities swiftly evacuated Grindavík, including guests from the Blue Lagoon hotel, as a safety precaution.

The volcanic activity follows a series of eruptions in the Reykjanes Peninsula, which has seen significant seismic activity since late 2023.

The eruption is still ongoing, though no magma has reached the surface yet.
