Iceland’s Sunddhnúksgígar volcano erupted, prompting a ‘red alert’ and the evacuation of tourists from a popular holiday spot.
Astonishing footage showed smoke billowing from the eruption, which began after seismic activity and pressure changes indicated magma flow.
Resident Ragnar Visage captured the terrifying moment the eruption occurred as the lava and magma can be seen flowing towards the outskirts of the town of Keflavík.
The volcanic activity follows a series of eruptions in the Reykjanes Peninsula, which has seen significant seismic activity since late 2023, and is the 8th eruption in the Grindavik fissure.
Authorities swiftly evacuated Grindavík, including guests from the Blue Lagoon hotel, as a safety precaution.
