Scientists have revealed that your favourite colour doesn’t actually exist!
A new study reveals that purple isn’t part of the visible light spectrum, and instead is created by your brain as a visual illusion.
When your eyes detect both red and blue light (which sit on opposite ends of the spectrum), your brain ‘bends’ the spectrum into a circle to make sense of it — and purple is born.
Unlike colours like red or green that have specific light wavelengths, purple is what’s known as a non-spectral colour, meaning it only exists in your mind.
So the next time you admire something purple, remember – it’s all thanks to your brain’s incredible ability to fill in the gaps.
