Italy’s Mount Etna erupted on this morning, sending large plumes of ash and smoke into the sky over Sicily.
The National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology reported a series of explosions, with a pyroclastic flow moving down the volcano’s southeastern edge.
While the eruption caused minimal disruption and no immediate danger, it led to a temporary red alert for nearby flights.
Mount Etna is highly active, and its eruptions, like this Strombolian event, often produce spectacular but manageable volcanic activity.
