A state of emergency has been declared in New York as brush fires rage through Long Island and near Brooklyn.

Firefighters, supported by National Guard helicopters, are battling the flames, with high winds fuelling the fires and causing evacuations.

Governor Kathy Hochul has issued a burn ban across Long Island, NYC, and the Hudson Valley and as the flames continued a major highway has been closed, and a military base evacuated.

Authorities are focused on preventing damage similar to the recent California wildfires two months ago.
