A rare Indian rhinoceros calf has been born at West Midlands Safari Park, marking only the second successful birth of the species in the park’s 52-year history.
For first-time mum, Sunanda’s delivery took a dramatic turn when keepers had to intervene in a life-threatening breech birth to save both mother and baby.
Miraculously, the calf survived and is now thriving, with Sunanda showing excellent maternal instincts.
The birth is a major win for rhino conservation, as Indian rhinos are classified as vulnerable and face threats like poaching and habitat loss.
The yet-to-be-named baby girl brings the park’s Indian rhino population to four and is expected to be visible to guests in the coming weeks.
