In a massive 24-hour effort, the San Diego Humane Society took in over 267 animals, including 96 guinea pigs surrendered by an overwhelmed pet owner and 50 chicks abandoned at a post office.

The animals were quickly triaged and distributed across campuses in Escondido, El Cajon, Oceanside, and San Diego for care and future adoption.

In a separate lifesaving mission, 44 animals – cats, kittens, and dogs – were transferred from overcrowded Los Angeles shelters to avoid euthanasia.

These emergency intakes highlight the growing demand for animal services across the region.

Despite being over capacity, the Humane Society continues its commitment to rescue and care, urging the public to adopt or donate.
